Joanna Waley-Cohen

(Eleanor) Joanna Waley-Cohen (born 10 June 1952) is a professor of history and chair of the Department of History at New York University. She specializes in early modern Chinese history, Chinese imperial culture, and China and the West.[1]

Biography

She is the daughter of Sir Bernard Waley-Cohen (1914-1991), 1st Baronet, a former Lord Mayor of London. She was educated at Cranbourne Chase School and the University of Cambridge, and earned her PhD in 1987 at Yale University.[1] She joined the faculty of New York University in 1992.[2] She was named a Collegiate Professor in 2008.[3] She is a past senior fellow of the Research Center for Urban Cultural History at the University of Massachusetts, Boston.[4]

In addition to her books, she has published articles on Chinese law, politics, foreign relations, and culinary culture.[2] She is a frequent presenter at academic seminars and symposia, such as at Yale University,[2] Columbia University,[5] and Marymount Manhattan College,[6] as well as appeared as expert on Chinese culinary history.[7] She is quoted in mainstream press as an expert on Chinese military and cultural history.[8]
